Cheek Tight Against Stone

In Collaboration with Sally Butin, Maddy Joss, Cristina Moya-Palacios, and Kiara Williams

“Cheek Tight Against Stone”. This work is a dancetheater work inspired by Albert Camus’ “The Myth of Sisyphus”. It uses Sisyphus and his boulder as a metaphor and jumping-off-point for ruminating on life's relentless and repetitive cycles.

The absurdist musings of Camus and the surrealist storytelling of Haruki Murakami inspire me. I am especially drawn to Murakami’s use of the dream world as a setting for reflection and a vantage point to (re)view your place in the world.

“Cheek” uses a cinderblock as the physical manifestation of “the boulder” and I hope to expand the use of cinderblocks to create a brutalist and surreal set. The movement begins slowly and meditatively and builds to wildness and exhaustion. I visualize choreography through affecting images and movement patterns within the space and think about building and releasing tension in the way a great drama can. I am using psychedelic rock that is interested in similar themes.

Cheek Tight Against Stone has been performed at ESTIA Fest in Queens, Triskelion Arts in Brooklyn and is in further development as part of The Green Space's Digging In Group.
