ARTIST STATEMENT

I am the essence of my character and the characters of those around me. I hold many truths and falsehoods within my body, within my work, within myself. Through artistic research, I discover depths within myself; I become a more fully human dancer, artist, and maker. The push and pull of my relationship with self and others is a continuous negotiation as I develop tools for creation. Realizing differences in movement qualities is part of my practice: how I can shift within states of being as I explore worlds adjacent to our own. I investigate how my queerness manifests itself in “masculine” and “feminine” movements during improvisation and movement creation, and what that means when transcribing my movement onto new bodies. Drawing inspiration from literature, pop culture, music, and queer media, I examine what it means to live within my body —with all the identities I carry— in this volatile world.

As a performer, I carry my lived experience with me into each rehearsal and performance. Interested in creative process, the arc of gained collective knowledge when working in ensemble settings is important to me. As a choreographer, collaboration is necessary for making work that is relevant to the bodies on stage. Dance is a living entity that evolves with every individual in the room
